Laptops, Notebooks and Tablets

I think most people have at least one large format device that they take with them when they are away which is great, but there are some considerations.

Most tablets charge via USB these days, and USB chargers that run from 12V are everywhere, but larger devices such as laptops and notebooks quite often take more power and need special considerations.

IF your device uses USB-C for charging then the KFD 140W USB DC-DC Car Charger is an excellent choice and tested, but if not then you have a number of other options such as the Car Charger 12V-24V Laptop Power Supply 15V 16V 18.5V 19V 19.5V 20V which will support most laptops and comes with a range of adapters.

If you have a magsafe laptop, or a laptop that uses a non-standard voltage, then you're only safe option is to use an Inverter, but make absolutely sure its a “Pure sine wave” Inverter. Many sold today just say “sine wave” or “modified sine wave” but these are not suitable, must be PURE sine wave, otherwise your charger will get hot, possibly overhead and be damaged.

Keeping it safe when you leave the vehicle is critical to hanging on to it, especially as many vehicles have windows everywhere. Never leave anything of value in sight, and find a secure place, not in a drawer or locker to keep it. Some people have space under seats, or between fittings, or somewhere no one would look if they were rooting through the place.

You can buy strong boxes like This one which aren't cheap, but you MUST bolt it down to the floor of your vehicle to be effective. Also be aware that you'll need to find a suitable location for this, again under seats or lockers where no one will look.

If you have a tracking service, like Apple's FindMy then make sure its turned on and tested.

You may (or not) be aware that your camper or moho insurance WILL NOT cover you expensive electronics, or any electronics in most cases which can be a surprise. Protecting your expensive electronics requires additional cover which in many cases will be provided by your home contents insurance, but be aware that most policies have a monetary limit on 'un-named' claims, so if you have an expensive laptop like the new Macbook Pro at £3400+ then it is unlikely to be fully covered so contact your insurer and make sure its on your policy.

If its not covered by your home contents, OR, you want to have separate cover for specific items like expensive phones, laptops, etc, then check out ….
